American Red Cross Spreads Fire Safety Message Volunteers Make MLK Day a Day of Service

Monday, January 21st, Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Northwest Florida teamed up with the YMCA of Northwest Florida to make Martin Luther King, Jr. day a time of Fire Safety & Prevention for the entire family.

“The YMCA was the perfect organization to work with because, like the Red Cross, they promote strong communities and strong families,” said Doug Watson, AmeriCorps member serving with the American Red Cross. “During this time of the year, historically, there have been more house fires as people sometimes resort to unsafe ways to stay warm. With MLK Day being a day of service, we thought this would be a good time to reach children and their parents with the fire prevention message.”

Volunteers taught fire safety to children at the YMCA’s day program with interactive games, stories and even a visit from Petey, the Preparedness Pelican. Others canvassed the surrounding Scenic Heights area in teams, going door-to-door to give residents fire safety information and leave safety door hangers. The door hangers, printed in both English and Spanish, provided cooking and heating tips, highlighted the importance of smoke alarms as well as the need to create and practice a fire escape plan.

Watson said the event focused on Scenic Heights because, according to the Escambia County Fire Department, that area had the highest number of house fires last year. However the Fire safety program can be duplicated in any neighborhood. For more information contact Watson at Douglas.watson@redcross.org. For fire safety information call your local Red Cross at 432-7601 or go to www.redcross.org/preapere/disaster/home-fire.
