Treyshawn Eddie Lake, an S. L. Jones Christian Academy student, has signed a full four year scholarship to the University of Faith in St Petersburg, Florida. During the signing ceremony in front of his entire student body, Treyshawn was surrounded by his mother, Franicine Gipson, the S.L. Jones Coach Tre’ Bonner, Coach Bennett from Pensacola High School, Rev. Willie Demps, the Academy CEO, and retired Lt. Colonel Millicent Demps, the Academy Principal. Treyshawn is the first S.L. Jones football scholarship recipient in the 15 year history of the academic institution. The University of Faith’s football coach, Anthony Givens, stated that the football program in St. Petersburg is designed to teach the players lessons in life and work which are Christ-like and help keep the young men on the right track. This year will be their second year on the field preparing to rebound from a 0-7 losing season. This college recruits heavily in the Pensacola area and the coach is very excited about signing Treyshawn Lake.
The Christian academy is a 501(c) 3 non-profit Christian School that provides private Christian education to inner city students of Pensacola, Florida, since June of 2000. Under a program instituted by the Florida Department of Education, students attending private schools are allowed to play sports at public schools if the private institution does not maintain that athletic program. Treyshawn has played football at Pensacola High School under this program. The academy does have a basketball program in which Treyshawn also competed.
Treyshawn has attended S.L. Jones since the third grade. According to his S.L. Jones coach, Tre Bonner, he has fought through the learning challenges of reading. A program called Learning R-X funded by Title I has provided the resources and assistance for him to highly succeed in this area. During the interview with the Pensacola Voice, Treyshawn was very articulate in describing his plans for college to study for an Engineering Degree.
S. L. Jones Christian Academy is a member of the Panhandle Christian Conference and is accredited through Advanced Accreditation Services since October 10, 2013. The school provides breakfast and hot lunch as part of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program. In order for students to be accepted at the academy a family application must be completed. The school also has an After School Program available for students in K-5 thru the 8th grade from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM. The program includes tutoring, playtime, snacks and transportation.
