Allen Paul, Washington High School Class of 1992, will return to Pensacola as music director of the show, “The Eve of Jackie Wilson”, which will begin a two night run on Friday, August 28th at the Pensacola Little Theatre. The second show will be on Saturday night, August 29th. Doors open for both shows at 7:00PM and the show begins at 8:00PM.
While growing up in Pensacola, Allen, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Marcus Paul, was drum major at Washington High School for three years and won the Florida Music Teachers Concerto Contest as a senior. Allen, a National Merit Scholar, received a full music scholarship to the University of Miami where he graduated with a degree in Keyboard Performance.
Allen remained in Miami after graduation and now has over 20 years of experience as a pianist, musical director, ministry associate, musical educator and writer. He is an experienced accompanist, having appeared with artists such as: Gladys Knight (when he was 19), Martha Munizzi and others.
His jazz/fusion trio called UnClazzified, recently released their first EP and the band played at the Port-Au-Prince Jazz Festival in Haiti earlier this year.
Allen says he is looking forward to coming home to direct “The Eve of Jackie Wilson,” and working with award winning actor, Chester Gregory. Chester Gregory, a veteran of the Broadway stage, plays the iconic Jackie Wilson. “This show is a look at Jackie Wilson the evening before he collapsed on stage. His last complete performance” said Gregory. Gregory Genders an exciting reenactment of the last show the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performed before falling ill.
The show’s promoter, Dr. Karl Lewis is also a Pensacola native, having graduated from Pine Forest High School in 1994. He played the trombone in the Pine Forest Eagles Band. Dr. Lewis attended Rollins College and the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. He currently practices in Bradenton, Florida. He is also the founder and President of Real People Real Music. Dr. Lewis, too, is excited about coming home to bring this show to his home community. “The show has played to sell-out audiences in the Tampa Bay Area and Pensacola is in for an amazing performance,” says Lewis.
Jackie Wilson’s son, Thor Wilson will be in attendance at both performances.
