For the 23rd year Truth for Youth has played Santa to a number of underprivileged children in the Escambia and Santa Rosa area. Beginning Saturday December 19th at the 1st Baptist Church in Flomaton/Century, children were given at least 2 gifts for Christmas. From there they moved to Milton where Santa showed up and gifts were distributed to everyone.
“We are thankful to Ms. Myra Williams, the director of E S Cobb Center for allowing us to have this event here. “ Christmas is only on one day. It’s not about the day after or the day before. It’s all about that one day that means a lot to children,” said Rev. John Powell. “What we try to do is catch the ones that fall through the cracks.” “We want to thank all of the people who made this possible; the Salvation Army, Civic organization, etc. We try to be the backup to the backup to make sure no child is left out where they wake up on Christmas morning and not have a gift.” Said Powell.
Rev. Powell went on to thank supporters such as The Pensacola Voice, the community, WRNE 980AM and Choice 106, who helped in getting the word out.
“We’re also excited about Tuesday. We are giving to mothers with infants. We are also going to give to grandmothers raising children as well as at Cobb Center from 11am-2pm
Approximately 300 children waited inside as parents and more children stood outside with the line wrapped around the building waiting to get in to receive the fabulous gifts awaiting them. Special thanks go out to Toys for Tots, Walmart, and Publix; we have so many good people in Pensacola. “I am a believer that each child should receive at two to three toys. “ Also in the giveaway were bicycles for girls and boys for Christmas.
