Once a month Patrick Hudson, a Chicago native, gives us his Sunday Soulfood Social. An enticing mix of music and food, the Social has quickly become one of the best things about Sunday nights in Pensacola. Three months ago, Hudson started his no cover charge event as the Sunday Seafood Social at the Fish House on S. Barracks St., but cooler weather necessitated an indoor location. With the new location, the Sunday Soulfood Social began at Five Sisters Blues Café in the historic Belmont-DeVilliers neighborhood. Once the weather gets warmer, his Sunday Seafood Social will resume at the Fish House.
This past Sunday night the music lineup included gifted 19-year-old eclectic songstress/song writer/guitarist, Jackie Clowe, with her father Bill Clowe as her accompanist. The Pensacola artist entertained the audience with her covering of songs by artists such as CeeLo Green and Sam Smith. Clowe also shared two of her original songs, “Truth be Told” and “Because”.
The final performer of the evening was Multi N Funk Band. Hailing from Mobile, Ala., this funky, jazzy, neo soul band wowed the audience with their cover of songs from Frankie Beverly & Maze, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, and many others. Band members include Phillip Whigham, band leader, bass & background vocals; Johnny Coleman, drums; Kenny Hubbard, lead guitar; and Dexter Lee, keyboardist.
The other star of the evening was Five Sisters. Even with a full house, their customer service did not waiver. They handled the crowd with expertise and got everyone seated and served with minimal wait time. The Sisters Sampler with its generous portions was spicy and fresh. The Sampler includes fried green tomatoes, mini-crabcakes, and andouille-crusted shrimp. It tastes even better than it sounds.
Prior to his move to Pensacola, Hudson lived in Atlanta ten years and experienced nightlife that included knowing which locations were known for great food and music. Part of his goal with the Sunday Social series is to create a similar ambiance of great food and bands in Pensacola. Looking forward Hudson’s sees this monthly event becoming a weekly ‘can’t miss’ opportunity for great artists and food. Hudson state, “I want people to know this [Five Sisters] is the place to go when you want good soul food and entertainment.”
