It was a time to shine on the 26th day of December, 2015. Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® the Delta Iota Omega Chapter presented eighteen young ladies into society. The event took place at New World Landing located on 600 South Palafox Street in Pensacola, Florida. Tickets were sold at $45.00 per person and all proceeds were donated to the AKA scholarship fund.
All guest were greeted by Carla Scott Jones (Chapter President) and Sorority Members. A presentation of each Debutante was presented by Mamie Webb Hixon (Sorority Member). During this presentation, the Debs were escorted by a male high school senior, the mother, and their father or father figure. After, they displayed unity by performing a dance. Their escorts presented a salute to the Debutantes before they danced with their father and/or father figures. These formal dances were choreographed by members Sheree Triplett Roberts, Carla Scott Jones, Tara Moultrie-Alexander, Stacye Moering, Latasha McGruder and Tai Knight.
After being gracefully entertained by the Debs and their presenters, dinner was blessed by Freda Lacey (Sorority Member). Music was provided by Bernard Hayward (“DJ Cool Ice Water”).
During the process of being presented to society, each Debutante submitted a written essay which was read and reviewed by the Writing Lab of The University of West Florida. Two debutantes were selected as winners. Coming in as the first place winner, Eriel Adams won a $1,500.00 scholarship and Deja Jones was the second place winner of $1,000.00 scholarship to cover college expenses. This was presented by Members Charmere Gatson and Kathy Williams.
A tribute to all Past Debutantes, Golden Sorors, Silver Star Sorors, and Members was presented by Mamie Webb Hixon (Mistress of Ceremonies). Unexpected, Hixon herself also won an award for serving over twenty-five years consecutive as the Mistress of Ceremonies at each AKA Debutante Ball for the Delta Iota Omega Chapter. Special recognition was awarded to members Shirley Henderson (Sorority Member) for AKA Soror of the Year, Charmere Gatson for Distinguished Service, and Andra Jefferson Sisterly Relations.
This was truly an elegant affair to remember. The center was decorated with drapes, crystals, and soft lights by Ann Richard. Each debutante was dressed all so beautifully in all white as there escorts were sharply dressed in all black tuxedos. Their gowns were styled by Two Times a Lady Bridal Boutique and Special Occasion.
