On Sunday, March 20th, Dr. Bernard Yates, pastor of Zion Hope Primitive Baptist Church, hosted “The Seven Last Sayings of Christ on the Cross” as part of their observance of Holy Week. This powerful program included a diverse mix of pastors from different denominations. Each pastor had a specific amount of time to preach about their last saying of Jesus Christ before his death on the cross. Dr. Michael Johnson, Sr., Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, served as worship leader for the program.
Rev. Clifton Riley, of Bethel AME Church, preached from Luke 23:34, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Rev. Dr. Joseph Marshall, St. John Divine Baptist Church, preached from Luke 23:43, “Verily I way unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Rev. Lonnie Wesley, III, from Greater Little Rock Baptist Church, brought his message from John 19:26, “Woman, behold thy son!” Rev. Hosea Montgomery, of Bethlehem United Missionary Baptist Church, had John 19:28, “I thirst.” Rev. Tim Coleman, from Point Baptist Church, took his text from Matthews 27:46, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Rev. Dr. Tyler Hardeman, Sr., of Antioch Baptist Church, brought his message from John 19:30, “It is finished.” And Rev. Robert Likely, of Mt. Caramel Baptist Church, had Luke 23:46, “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.” The messages these pastors poured into the congregation was described by one person in attendance as “life changing.”
