The torrential rain on Easter Sunday may have dampened some spirits, but those who took a chance and attended Truth for Youth’s 16th Annual Easter Eggtravaganza at the E. S. Cobb Community Center were greeted by cheerful and busy volunteers working to ensure all attendees had an “eggcellent” time. Normally the Eggtravaganza is held at McGee Field, but an alternate indoor location was secured so the tradition could continue despite the deluge. Rev. Powell, his board members, and other volunteers painstakingly transformed the Center into an Easter wonderland.
The children attending were given the opportunity to earn some money by displaying their physical prowess and reading proficiency. Rev. Powell explained to the children that he was not giving them money, but rather that they earned the money. The entire afternoon was about him educating and rewarding them as they had fun. Each child has given nearly a dozen candy filled eggs, a toy, and other treats. There were also human-sized “bunnies” and real bunnies for the children to pet.
Board member Kim Jennings shared, “We have been in existence since 1993 and we are a 5013c nonprofit youth organization. We serve Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties and we even go as far as Flomaton, Alabama for some of our outreach.”
“We have events for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Back-to-School, and many other special days through the year” stated board member Tomi Hill.
Truth for Youth accomplishes their goals with volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering your time or if you would like to make a donation, please contact Rev. Powell at 850-393-0332.
