March 29, 2016 — Pensacola native Vincent L. Smith III, receives a Vietnam Veterans Honoree Pin from Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter at a wreath-laying ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial –“The Wall.” U.S. Vietnam Veterans and their families were recognized for their service and sacrifices as part of the national Vietnam War Commemoration.
The ceremony was hosted by VA Secretary Robert McDonald, who extended his gratitude for the partnership with the Department of Defense and Secretary Carter’s Vietnam War Commemoration staff for their assistance “in planning this humble tribute to our Vietnam Veterans and their families.”
Smith served as an Army bandsman in Vietnam while attached to the 23rd Infantry Division. He is a 1964 graduate of Washington Senior High School and a 1969 Florida A & M University graduate, where he was a member of the “Incomparable Marching 100” and a student arranger.
He is the son of the late Vincent Lee Smith and Leola G. Smith of Pensacola.
