By Jackie Miles

Graham Loiselle, a 15 year old student at Pine Forest High School won a $2000 scholarship as a result of a violin competition sponsored by the Music Study Club.  Graham is also a member of the

Belmont Youth Band where he not only plays his violin but teaches his fellow players the art.  “Teaching others helps me to develop patience.  I also earn volunteer hours by working with the Belmont Youth Band, which helps me earn scholarships.”

Graham has been with the Belmont Youth Band since he was nine years old.  When asked how Belmont has helped him he replied,” They provided me a violin and lessons for no charge.  They also give me numerous performance opportunities.  I performed at the Civic Center in front of seven thousand people, thanks to Belmont.  I also found out about the Music Study Club’s violin competition through them.  I was fortunate enough to win and it allowed me to spend two weeks at Florida State University’s violin camp.”

Graham received $1000 in cash and the balance cover the FSU Music Camp.

Founded by Vivian Lamont and Rudy Pendleton in 2003, the Belmont Youth Band has been responsible for donating free instruments, music lessons and music supplies to prospective students.

Their mission is to help as many students as possible receive scholarships to college.
