Celebrating Joseph Lewis’ 93rd Birthday April 1st

Joseph Lewis, a retired U.S. Postal manager and a veteran of World War II, will celebrate his 93rd birthday on April 1, 2016 with his family at his home.  He is devoted and married to his college sweetheart, Meda Bolar Lewis, with whom he celebrated their 70th Wedding anniversary on March 25, 2016. To this union they had (7) children: Cheryl (Gerald) Poe, Sandra (Willie) Owens, Brian Lewis, Jacenta Walker, Janice Bivins, Greg (Diane) Lewis, and Pamela (Reginald) Bradley. They have (15) grandchildren and (17) great-grandchildren.

Mr. Lewis, who retired after serving 41 years at the U.S. Postal Service as Plant and Engineering Department Manager, worked in many positions and could be called a ‘Jack of all Trades’.  Mr. Lewis entered the U.S. Postal Service in 1945 as a letter carrier and worked in that position for 21 years. He also worked as an electrician, a mail processing equipment mechanic and an electronic technician.

He was the first and only Black to hold the position of Sectional Center Manager in the Florida District.  This position covered an area of 1200 square miles with 85 associate Post Offices, including Pensacola, Panama City and the Tallahassee areas.  Mr. Lewis was one of the Founders and organizers of the Pensacola Branch of the National Alliance of the Postal and Federal Employees, a predominately Black Labor Union.  He served as First President for (5) terms and was later elected to serve (3) more terms.

Working for the U.S. Postal Service was only part of the ‘Jack’ trades.  He also had a knack for getting involved socially.  For example, Mr. Lewis served on the following committees:  Automation Planning Group; the Women’s Advisory Council; Escambia County Sign Ordinance Committee; Member of the Board of Directors for the Council on Aging; Former President of Hill View Homeowner’s Association and he was inducted into the African-American Archives Hall of Fame on July 2, 1993.

Mr. Lewis has been a faithful member of First Corinthian Baptist Church for many years, holding positions on committees including the Office of the Board of Trustees and currently serving as a Deacon.

He gives thanks to the Lord for giving him the health and strength to serve his family, church and community.  His favorite Biblical expression is “God’s Grace is Sufficient”.
