Dr. James S. Young Retires after 61 years of Ministry

Family and friends came out Saturday evening to begin the celebration with a Retirement Banquet of retirement of Rev. James S Young at the Zion Hope Center.

Approximately 100+ people were on hand to wish Rev. Young and his first lady, former County Commissioner Marie Young, well.

Toastmaster for the occasion was Dr. Larry Watson, Sr., President of the Baptist Ministers’ Union. As the crowd found their seats, people wandered over to the table of Rev. Young and his wife to congratulate him on his retirement and years of service.

After an opening selection and reading of the scripture the occasion was given and everyone lined up to enjoy the feast catered by Tony Cole’s Restaurant.

Afterwards, a tribute was given by Pastoral Colleagues, Sons in the Ministry, and ministers from Mt. Canaan Missionary Baptist Church.
“Rev. Young has spent sixty-one years in the ministry at the same church,” said Dr. James S. Miller. “Moses led the people in the wilderness for 40 years; David ruled his kingdom for 40 years but Rev. Young ministered to Mt. Canaan for 61 years.”

Not only was Rev. Young a soldier in the ministry, he was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement in Pensacola. He often represented and negotiated for Black employees at Naval Air Station during this period. Just as he stood strong for Jesus, he stood strong for equality for Blacks in the workplace.

Sunday morning at 11 am service, Rev. preached his final sermon. Taken from Hebrew 11:8 he said “Jesus is always the same. God is constant. The world may change but God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

The celebration culminated Sunday afternoon at First Baptist Church of Warrington where Rev. James Miller is pastor. Elder Bernard C Yates, President of the National Primitive Baptist Convention, USA, Inc and pastor of Zion Hope Primitive Baptist Church delivered the dynamic retirement celebration sermon.

In the words of a very famous author “Well done thy good and faithful servant.”
