Friday evening began a weekend of celebration as Macedonia Baptist Church gave honor and accolades to their pastor, Dr. A.L. Durant, Sr.
A native of Repton, Ala., at the age of 21 the patriots of old called Alvin Lee Durant and his newly wed bride, Lexie Beatrice Cook, born in Pigeon Creek, Ala., to serve as pastor.
As service began, Macedonia deacons and visiting deacons led in the devotion. Deacon and Sister Ollie Ray Archibald escorted Pastor Durant and daughter, Ester Monique Durant, down the aisle as members and friends looked on with admiration to a man that has been so faithful in his leadership.
It was apparent from the beginning that the young minister and his wife would grow with the church and nurture its’ flock. To many they exemplified “walk by faith and not by sight.”
The pastor of St. Mark Baptist Church in Brewton, Ala., Reverend Moses Atwood, served as the pulpit conductor for the evening. The guest speaker for the occasion was Rev. Frank Jenkins, pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Choir rendering high praise through song.
Even though the young Durant worked up to 12 hours some days as a skilled brick mason, his day-time occupation never deterred him from rendering service for the Lord or his people.
As the celebration came to a close Sunday evening, the Greater Union Baptist Church hosted the closing services with Rev. Michael Thompson, pastor delivering the sermon.
Many ministers were on hand to give expressions of love to Dr. Durant including Dr. Jack Reeves of Greater Sardis Baptist Church, Rev. Isaac Williams of Greater True Vine Baptist Church, Rev. Carl Reeves of Greater Mt. Lily Baptist Church to name just a few.
During his first year as pastor, the active membership roll increased from 40 to 53. Of those fifty-three members, only one of the original members is still blessed to praise God with the congregation. That member is sister: Mildred (Dailey) Thomas.
Dr. Durant’s wife of 62 years and 4 months went to be with the Lord January 21, 2012. He has his two daughters, Minister Lola Newlene (Rev. Michael) Dean and Esther Monique Durant, two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one foster grandson, two brothers, Roy Durant, Jr. and William (Rosetta) Durant, Sr. one sister
Margaret (Wallace) Thomas and one brother-in-law Roy (Flossie Cook to keep him busy with life.
Congratulations Dr. Durant for walking a life that God would smile on.
