Not Another New Year’s Resolution Article

by LaDonna Spivey
Happy 2013! It’s the third week of the new year, so if you don’t mind, I’m going to skip the usual “How to keep your New Year’s Resolution and Get in Shape” ar- ticle and ask you a few questions. The first one.
If you know that you need to eat healthi- er, if you know that you need to exercise or lose weight, why don’t you do what you already know you need to do?
I’m often confounded that I see so many Christians who shout, dance and extol that they have Victory in Christ, yet are slaves to a plate of food or a piece of chocolate. Does God only work in the supernatural, leaving us on our own in the natural? Quite frankly, what does it matter that my faith can help me do something fantastic and completely un- necessary like move a mountain into the sea, but it can’t help me do something
necessary like get up a flight of stairs without bending over, holding my side and gasping like a dying guppie?
“.. Truly I say to you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you… but whoa unto you if you are confronted with a plate of fried chicken, whoa unto you if you have to walk more than three car lengths to the front door of the all- you-can-eat buffet, then you shall surely die (or live on handfuls of medication to control your heart disease, diabetes, gout, etc).
There are some who will get angry with me for distorting God’s Word, but isn’t that exactly what we do with our living testimony?
Please don’t misunderstand, this is not about being a certain clothing size or fit-
ting into some societal view of physical perfection. Those are the goals that have not worked in the past. Shallow goals inspire shallow actions which produce shallow results. It’s about getting our spiritual houses in order and letting our physical houses follow. It’s about the God controlling our lives and not leav- ing our health off the table
Is the Holy Spirit truly your comforter? or is Ben & Jerry?
Does God renew your mind? Or does the television?
Is the Lord your strength? Or is a bottle of wine?
When you’ve had a bad day, is the Lord your refuge? Or is a salty snack?
The Webster’s dictionary definition of indulge is a: to give free rein to; b: to take unrestrained pleasure in. What are your indulgences?
Change is not easy. Often the spirit is
willing, but the flesh is weak. Fortunate- ly we have a savior who overcame the world. This year, instead of making an- other New Year’s resolution, let’s talk to God. Let’s ask him for His power, His presence, His Wisdom and His will for all areas of our lives. Then let’s ask Him again tomorrow and the next day and the next.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. – Isaiah 41:10
With a Spiritual Personal Trainer like that, let’s get off the side lines and get into the game. See you on the field!
