Pensacola Celebrates 30th MLK Holiday

By: Tonya Jackson

In 1986, the King Holiday became an official federal holiday. While Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s actual date of birth is January 15, it was decided that this national holiday would be observed on the third Monday in January. Through the years, one mainstay in the celebration of his life and legacy continues the annual local parade in his honor.

This year the Pensacola parade was held downtown on Monday, January 18th and featured Pensacola Police Chief David Alexander, III as the Grand Marshal. Participants included local school bands, churches, law firms, motorcycle clubs, Greek organizations, local businesses, and others. While candy and beads were the favors of choice those cheering along the route also received stuffed animals, mini footballs, and books.20160118_120325
