By Wesley Martin Denario Dukes, 22, claims Escambia County Sheriff’s Department deputies assaulted him during a March 10 arrest for cocaine possession.
“I was driving near the Exxon on Fairfield drive and that is when [the police] turned their lights on,” Dukes said. “I pulled the car over to the side of the road and got out of the truck and began to run through a wooded area with two deputies chasing me.”
Dukes said he surrendered and no longer attempted to flee law enforcement officials once he made it to a residential area.
“I put my hands up … and told them ‘I give up,’” Dukes said. Sadly, according to Dukes, once he was apprehended, arresting officers began to physically assault him.
“[The arresting officer] kicked me, grabbed me by my neck, slammed me and started to choke me,” Dukes said.
Dukes said during the altercation, the officers almost cut off airway for him to breathe. “I thought I was going to die,” he said.
ESCO Commander Ricky Shelby said this matter is currently part of an ongoing investigation.
