Reggie Evans Hosts Celebrity Charity Softball Game

By Keri Brye

On a beautiful Saturday at the Blue Wahoos Stadium, Pensacola native and Brooklyn Nets forward, Reggie Evans hosted his first annual charity softball game.

The event featured celebrities such as Miami Heat’s Rashard Lewis, San Diego Chargers’, Tyrone Green, Indianapolis Colts’, Darius Butler, Tampa Bay Buccaneers’, Mason Foster, retired NFL star Fred Robbins, Detroit Pistons’, Peyton Siva and Pensacola NASCAR driver, Johanna Long,  the only female participant at the event.

Tickets started at $8 for general admission, $35 to meet and greet celebrity players and $150 for VIP seats. All proceeds from the game went to the Reggie Evans Foundation which provides resources in the Pensacola community to access academic, athletic and extracurricular activities. Other activities to generate funds for the event included a silent auction on a pair of Kobe Bryant’s shoes, and an auction of the jerseys worn by the players during the charity softball game.

“This is the first time I’ve opened such event,” said Reggie Evans. “I’ve played ball in front of thousands and I find myself nervous in my own hometown,” said Evans.

Reggie hoped to encourage kids to become anything they want when they are older. “This event is really for the kids,” he said. “This is really why we are here. The kids may be on TV one day hosting an event or being a professional sports player,” he said.

Evans brought children from his neighborhood to watch the event. The kids, wearing t-shirts provided by Evans, were seated next to the dugout.  “It’s good to be able to give back to the community,” Evans said. “It feels good to inspire kids and give them something to look forward to.”
