Summer is over: Students gear up for school

By Wesley Martin

Truth Four Youth will hold their third and final installment of the “Summer Youth Celebration” this upcoming Sunday, August 19th , at the Hollice T. Williams Park.

At the event, which is set to begin at 4 p.m., attendees will be able to receive free school giveaways and a free meal. Additionally, the first 40 children who come to the event will get a chance to swim free at the Cecil T. Hunter pool.

“We have kids coming from all over various schools in Escambia County and Santa Rosa County,” said Rev. John Powell, founder of Truth For Youth. “So far we’ve [helped] close to 500 children within the last two weeks. We’re looking for a record number of [participants] on the 19th.”

As a good service to the community, before the main event begins, Powell said back-to-school haircuts will be provided to children from 2 – 4 p.m. But, Powell warns, those who are interested must be on time.

“If they come at 4:05 p.m., they will be too late,” Powell said. “I believe in promptness. So if a child needs a haircut and was unable to go to a licensed barber, this is the one time they can come and get a free haircut.”

Powell, who is a licensed barber himself, says there will be an additional four or five barbers assisting with haircuts. (Powell is soliciting other local licensed barbers to volunteer with the haircut portion of the event. He can be reached at 850.393.0332).

Truth For Youth asks that all attendees  bring a can good to donate. Those that do will receive a door prize.

“We started the summer youth celebration, formally known as the summer bash, well over 10 years ago now,” Powell said. “Our hope is that we provide a safe environment for the youth not only for the Hayne Street area, but for the surrounding housing development areas as well.”

Naval Air Station Pensacola, H&O Café and Par Four Golf Club Pensacola will also be in attendance.
