The Gulf Coast African American Chamber of Commerce (GCAACC) held its 3rd Annual Community Awards on Friday, April 7th at Sheila’s It’s Personal in Brownsville and honored non-profit organizations and for-profit businesses which have demonstrated leadership in community outreaches in Pensacola and Escambia County. The African-American Chamber is 19 years old according to the Interim Executive Director, Angelena Wheat, who succeeded Nicole Dixon who left the position to pursue several business opportunities.
The awards were presented by Dr. Kim LeDuff, Dean and Associate Vice Provost of the University College, UWF in a mock television show format as each of the awardees came up to the center stage to be interviewed prior to the awards being presented. The awardees who were presented with beautifully designed Non-Profit of the Year Awards are as follows: Kimberly Cox for her work with “My Brothers and Sisters”, Ann Richard and her work through the King Richard Foundation, Tia and Fred Robbins for their work with the community through “Mr. Robins Neighborhood”, Fannie Finkley for her work with Pensacola Caring Hearts feeding persons in need of food, and Shaun Hartsfield for his work with H.Y.P.E. which stands for “Helping Youth in Pensacola Endure”.
In addition to the honoring of non-profit organizations the GCAACC also honored its chamber members. The Business of the Year Awards went to: Joan Mitchell for her work with her company, Express Dental Lab, her husband James Mitchell, for his work with Across the Board Consulting and Baptist Health Care received the Corporate Member of the Year Award.
The former Executive Director Nicole Dixon in an interview with the Voice Newspaper stated, “I am so proud that the chamber continues to grow and the work that we did during my time as Executive Director continues to pay off”! An example of the African American Chamber’s growing influence is it’s co-sponsoring of the “Winning Federal Government Contracts” Workshop on Tuesday, April 18th from 6:00 pm to 8 pm at Pensacola City Hall.
