This past Sunday, on Sanders Beach, The King Richard Foundation, Inc. presented a wonderful event entitled, The Beauty by the Bay Fashion Show and Dinner Greek Extravaganza. The event featured historically Black Fraternities and Sororities in the Pensacola Escambia County area. The Alpha Kappa Alphas, the Delta Sigma Thetas, the Omega Psi Phi and the Alpha Phi Alpha marched across the stage and proudly displayed their organization’s colors with an air of solidarity that was inspiring to watch. The event’s mission, however, was to bring together the brothers and sisters from these outstanding fraternities and sororities to help children with autism.
Autism Spectrum Disorder normally appears in infancy and early childhood development causing delays in many basic areas, such as learning to speak, and playing and interacting with others. In 2013, 1 in 50 school children had autism, which was a huge increase from 2012 when it was 1 in 88 children. Autism is now becoming one of the fastest growing disorders in the country and effects boys more than girls. In Pensacola, Florida, autism is really hitting home within the Black community. The King Richard Foundation helps parents who have children with autism by bringing this topic to the forefront on a regular basis. The education of autism is now being discussed more than ever, and is supported nationwide.
The King Richard Foundation, Inc. has been in existence for almost 10 years and this was their 6th Annual Fashion Show. It was founded and designed to help children with autism receive scholarships for camp. This camp is specially designed to help autistic children experience an atmosphere of recreation, socialization, and learning with their peers. This foundation raised over $11K to send eight children to the camp. In addition, this foundation also helps children all across Escambia County with Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets, as well as coats, and hot meals during the holiday season. Although this foundation is dedicated to helping children with autism, they believe in helping all children whenever the opportunity arises.
