In the United States, one in four women dies from heart disease. For the fourth year the Pensacola, FL Chapter of The Links, Incorporated Go Red for Heart Health Red Dress Jazz Brunch and Fashion Show, focused on this killer and provided women with useful tools to recognize symptoms of heart disease and combat the damage done by this killer. Sue Straughn, news anchor at WEAR ABC3, served as the emcee at this informative and stylish event.
Sharon Bourges-Jones, local Links chapter president, presented Pensacola Police Chief David Alexander, III with the President’s Community Service Award and presented Taylor Simone Wilkerson with the 2016 Pensacola Chapter of The Links Scholarship. In accepting his award, Chief Alexander stated, “Thank you so very much. And certainly it humbling to receive recognition like this. As I look out in the audience today, so many friends and so many people I’ve worked with down through the years. I receive this recognition on behalf of the partnerships that existed down through the years; I’m thankful today for the art of service that comes from a group like the Pensacola Chapter of The Links. Certainly we are linked together in friendship because we are linked together in service.”
The Links medical panelists this year included Dr. Thanh Duong-Wagner and Meghan McCarthy, MPH, MBA. Dr. Duong-Wagner is a board certified cardiologist with subspecialty training certification in Echocardiography and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. She is a steering member of the Baptist Heart & Vascular Institute and serves as Medical Director of the Baptist Hospital Echocardiography and Vascular Laboratory. Meghan McCarthy was recognized in 2001 by the Wellness Council of America as one of the Top 100 Wellness Professionals in the United States. She leads the Healthy Lives revolution at Baptist Health Care. Panelists shared information with attendees and answered questions from the audience.
Attendees dined on heart healthy chicken and spinach quiche while listening to the jazz of Al Alvarado. Featured models were Jaria Butler, Kate Hanyak, Jade Taylor Garrison, Kaylen Danielle Jones, Lisa Mair, Tiffany Rand, Tia Robbins, Mecca Moor-Tartt, and Abigal Wishon.
